The Victor Adding Machine Co. This company is one of the few manufacturers of mechanical calculators that survived the technological changes of the electronic revolution. Founded in 1918 by Carl Buehler of Chicago, its first product was the Victor 110, a full keyboard adding machine similar to the Comptometer with no printing capabilities designed by Oliver David Johantgen (1875-1932). Three years later this model was improved to have printing capabilities. It produced several models such as the series 300 introduced in 1923, the series 500 in 1931, the series 600 and 700 in 1939. [11] By 1952 Victor had sold more than one million machines. As noted before, Oscar Sundstrand joined the company in 1950 and designed the Victor printing calculator introduced in 1954. Later, in 1961, Victor merged with the Comptometer division of Felt & Tarrant Mfg. Co. to become the Victor Comptometer Corp. In 1968 Victor joined forces with Nixdorf and entered into the market of electronic desktop calculators with the Victor series 1500, and has stayed strong in this segment of the market until now.

Ab ca. 1959 in der Mittel- und Hochschule rechnete ich zu einem grossen Teil mit einer Rechenscheibe, der LOGA 30Tt* Rechenscheibe aus Metall mit Plastikbeschichtung und Lederetui der Schweizer Firma "Loga-Calculator AG" aus Uster im Kanton Zürich, die Vorderseite besitzt eine starre Außenskala und eine von der Seite drehbare Innenskala, während die Rückseite aus einer Skala besteht. Die Rechenscheibe besitzt T (die technischen Skalen Grund-, Reziprok-, Quadrat-, Kuben-, Quadratwurzel-, Kubikwurzel- und die Logaskala) sowie t (trigonometrische Skalen), die Skalenlänge beträgt 30 cm. Fast einen Monatslohn gab ich als junger Lehrer 1971 für meinen ersten Taschenrechner aus, einen Busicom HANDY LE 120A Nr. 25GB100222*. Dafür wurde er um so mehr bestaunt. Er läuft heute noch. Meanwhile, Mostec developed a complete MOS-LSI for "calculator-on-a-chip" which was used in Busicom's first handheld model (Handy LE-120A) later in 1971. Mostec's chip was the world's first calculator-on-a-chip. The Handy LED-120A also had other 2 innovations. One is the use of a luminous diode display. The other was the use of a small AA-battery to power the calculator. The calculator was very small and was advertised as a "palmtop computer". It create a sensation but it didn't sell well in Japan because it was very expensive (\89800). (At that time the monthly pay of the graduate of university was about \46500!) the casio al-10 is a personal favourite of mine. from 1976, it displays 10 digits and is very easy to use with large buttons that are easy to press.
together with the 4 basic functions and a memory is a rather splendid mechanical six position switch which defines the function of the top right 'p' button. these functions are: square root, grant total, remainder fractions, hours, minutes & second, statistics (standard deviation)
a lot of these operate as modes rather than pure function. for example, GT tallies the total sum for every '=' and is recalled by pressing 'p', rem puts the machine into a remainder mode where only the integer part is displayed after a division and the remainder can be recalled by pressing 'p'.
Although the al-8 was the first fractional calculator, the al-10 fraction mode is more useful because of the 10 digit display. the whole part, the numerator and the denominator each cannot exceed three digits and the total cannot exceed 8 (eg 1234½ is not allowed). for example 355/226 is reduced and correctly displayed as 1/129/226 whereas this cannot be accommodated on the al-8. the other switch alters the rounding mode for normal floating point operation. the choices are cut, which truncates to 2 decimal places or 5/4 for rounding. internally, the machine operates to 10 digits with no guard. sometimes this model would suffer the sticky button problem.
